Make America Work Again

The presidential debate tonight will likely illuminate many differences between the candidates. But most voters have already made up their minds. How do the candidates attract the voters who are undecided? As in the 2016 election, a small percentage of voters in a few key states could swing the election.

The candidates differ sharply on the role of government. But they offer next to nothing on how to make government work better. Two-thirds of Americans favor "major structural changes," according to a 2019 University of Chicago/Associated Press poll.

Where is a vision on how to make government work again? That's what many Americans want — not rhetoric on whether government is good or bad. Here is Philip Howard's column today in The Hill with an overhaul vision for frustrated voters.

  • Political scientist Paul Light's new seven-part blog series at the Brookings Institution focuses on the public demand for major overhaul and will make the case over the next few weeks for a fix-government-fast reform agenda.

  • The video of our latest forum, The Wake-Up Call: For a New Operating System of Government, is available on our website.

  • Last week, Philip participated in a forum hosted by the Center for Governance and Markets at the University of Pittsburgh. Here's a report in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
