Matoiesian Raises Auto Prices Editorial Madison County Record, April 23, 2006 Highlighting Common Good Chair Philip K. Howard’s recent City Journal essay, The Record of Madison County, IL, recently writes: “The problem here, according to Howard, lies with judges, whose serial yielding of their own authority has rendered the bench impotent. In a civil lawsuit between two parties, a judge’s job is to represent the law and the people. By deferring questions of law like ‘how safe is safe enough’ to jurors, they betray our democracy by transforming a group of randomly-selected citizens into a back-door legislative body.”
