Howard: Legal System Should Serve the Common Good from "Lawyers, Malpractice and Money" Larry Rulison Philadelphia Business Journal, June 11, 2004 A study by the Philadelphia Business Journal found that "10 local law firms won
$160 million in jury verdicts for their clients in medical malpractice cases that
were tried in the region from 2001 to 2003." This amount is in addition to money
earned through settlements, which are confidential. "Local trial attorneys cautioned
that jury verdicts represent only a fraction of the awards they win."
CG Chair Philip K. Howard was asked by the Journal about trial lawyers' resistance
to medical malpractice reforms. "It's the way they're used to doing business,
so they want to keep it that way," Howard said. "I understand it, but I just don't
think it is good for society."
