Former CG Director of Policy Nancy Udell Discusses Defensive Teaching

Topical Currents, May 3, 2004

On the radio show Topical Currents (WLRN, Miami, FL; NPR), Nancy Udell discussed the findings of a recent Harris poll, commissioned by Common Good, on law and public schools. The poll found that 82 percent of teachers and 77 percent of principals agree that the current legal climate has created a phenomenon that could be called "defensive teaching"--meaning that their decisions are motivated by a desire to avoid legal challenges.

Moreover, 62 percent of principals surveyed said that they have been threatened with a legal challenge by parents.
