Reforming Medical Liability (Forum) Paul Barringer Issues in Science and Technology, July 1, 2008 Medical liability reform has plauged policymakers, physicians, insurers and patients for decades. In an excerpt from their recent book, Frank Sloan and Lindsay Chepke discuss the history and myths of medical malpractice and go on to outline the vital need to improve quality and patient safety. Common Good General Counsel Paul Barringer responds to the article, highlighting the ongoing efforts of Common Good to promote new systems to adjudicate medical malpractice claims. Barringer notes that, though prospects for legislative reform may appear bleak, there are still many ways in which hospitals, insurers or states might test administrative compensation alternatives. "If these enduring problems were easy to fix, policymakers would have done so decades ago. Still, though solutions may be challenging, they’re far from impossible. Sloan and Chepke’s article and the book from which it is drawn will undoubtedly play a significant role in continuing to spur interest in promising reform alternatives," writes Barringer. » article
