Medical Liability System Hinders Improvements in Patient Safety: Joint Commission Expert Panel Offers Solutions to Crisis

In a press release, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) announced the publication of its white paper on reforming the medical liability system with an emphasis on “the critical importance of open communication” in the patient-doctor relationship. The paper was developed in collaboration with an Expert Roundtable, in which Common Good Chair Philip K. Howard participated.  The Joint Commission supports a new system for medical justice and agrees with Mr. Howard that the current method has “infected health care with a debilitating distrust.”
