Healthcare Leadership Council Supports Enzi-Baucus Bill Funding Health Court Pilot Projects

June 22, 2006

In a statement by Mary R. Grealy, President of the Healthcare Leadership Council, a coalition of chief executive of the nation's leading health care companies and institutions, announced that the Council supports S. 1337, the Fair and Reliable Medical Justice Act, which would authorize pilot health court projects.  Noting that "[f]or too long, efforst to address the nation's liability crisis have been mired in political stalemate," the statements commends Senators Michal Enzi (R. WY) and Max Baucus (D. MT) for "advancing a bipartisan approach to this critical issue, an innovative idea that can help improve an environment that is undermining access to quality health care for patients throughout the country."

The Council believes that "it is eminently reasonable to begin addressing the liability crisis by testing the concept of bringing medical expertise to bear on complex medical litigation" and "[t]he Enzi-Baucus concpet, to have special courts made up of medical experts examine the legitimacy of malpractice claims deserve careful examination."
