Health Courts Debated as Tort Alternative

Phil Turner
United Press International, May 5, 2005

United Press International reports on "Health Courts: Exploring the Concept," a forum co-hosted by Common Good, the AEI-Brookings Joint Center for Regulatory Studies, and the Harvard School of Public Health. (Read about the forum.)

At the forum, "[p]hysicians and academics said a system of health courts to adjudicate malpractice disputes would be more equitable, faster and more accessible than the current system of litigation."

Common Chair Philip K. Howard said the forum was "'meant to lead us out of something of a free fall in the healthcare system of America.' What is needed, he said, is a system that assures quality, reduces waste, is fair to parties injured by mistakes and that can distinguish what is and what is not good care."
