to make health care safer and more accessible, to rapidly compensate injured patients,
and to effectively weed out bad physicians. Towards a More Reliable System of Medical Justice: Opportunities, Challenges & Lessons Learned Location: Washington, DC November 18, 2008 Common Good, in coordination with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, hosted its fifth national forum to discuss the health court concept. The event brought together key stakeholders to examine where the proposal has met with challenges and where opportunities exist for the future of patient-safety focused alternatives to medical liability. Do No Harm Location: Denver, CO November 14, 2008 The Colorado Patient Safety Coalition hosts its annual "Do No Harm" conference in Denver, discussing patient safety and health care quality. Compensating Birth-Related Injuries through an Administrative Process: Weighing the Benefits for New York June 3, 2008 Common Good hosted a public forum with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (District II/NY) in New York, NY as part of our ongoing state outreach efforts. This forum presented information and solicted input about the possibility of launching a birth-injury administrative compensation program in New York. Healthcare Reform and Patient Safety: Challenges & Opportunities for Medicine and the Law Location: Laramie, WY April 1, 2008 Common Good cosponsored a symposium with several of the University of Wyoming’s schools and the Wyoming Healthcare Commission. The forum brought together a range of experts to discuss patient safety challenges facing health care providers in Wyoming and across the country. Administrative Compensation of Birth-Related Injuries: Potential Benefits for Maryland Location: Annapolis, MD March 6, 2008 Common Good's second state-focused forum presented information and solicited input about the possibility of launching a birth-injury compensation program in Maryland. Health Courts, Administrative Compensation & Patient Safety: Research, Policy & Practice Location: Washington, DC November 5, 2007 Common Good's fourth forum in a series of events held in coordination with the Harvard School of Public Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, examined patient-safety focused alternatives to the current medical liability system and solicited feedback from key stakeholders. Patient Safety & Reducing Medical Errors: Exploring Options Location: Cheyenne, WY October 15, 2007 Common Good and the Wyoming Healthcare Commission co-hosted a public forum in Cheyenne, WY to discuss patient-safety focused alternatives to the medical liability system. This state-based event considered new research on medical liability from professors at the Harvard School of Public Health and heard perspectives from local health care providers, administrators and policymakers. Common Good Offers Expert Testimony in Maryland Location: Annapolis, MD March 1, 2007 Common Good General Counsel Paul Barringer offered independent expert testimony on the health court model before the Maryland House Judiciary Committee. Maryland is just one state considering implementing parts of the health court model. Regulation of Medical Professionals: Innovations in Regulation, Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety Location: Denver, CO February 27, 2007 Common Good Colorado and the University of Denver Sturm College of Law hosted a healthcare symposium that brought together international, national and Colorado experts to take a candid look at regulation of the medical profession, now and in the future, and the potential for improving quality and safety. Health Courts & Administrative Compensation: Opportunities for Safety Enhancement Location: Kaiser Family Foundation Barbara Jordan Conference Center, Washington, DC November 8, 2006 Common Good and the Harvard School of Public Health hosted their third in a series of forums exploring the health court concept. Participants focused on how an administrative approach to injury compensation could enhance safety and quality, as well as legal and policy issues likely to be raised by proposed demonstration projects. Speakers and respondents included academics as well as individuals from consumer groups, quality organizations, provider organizations, and others. House Committee Hearing on Health Courts Location: 2123 Rayburn House Office Building July 13, 2006 Senate Hearing on Special Health Courts Hearing Before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, & Pensions on S.1337, the "Fair and Reliable Medical Justice Act" Location: U.S. Senate Dirksen 430 June 22, 2006 The U.S. Senate held a hearing on Thursday, June 22nd, to consider bi-partisan legislation that would create pilot projects for special health courts. The bill (S.1337) - the Fair and Reliable Medical Justice Act - has been introduced by Senators Enzi and Baucus. Common Good is developing models for expert health courts based on research conducted at The Harvard School of Public Health and funded by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
