Administrative Compensation of Birth-Related Injuries: Potential Benefits for Maryland

March 6, 2008

Location: Annapolis, MD

Common Good hosted its second state-focused forum to present information and solicit input about the possibility of launching a birth-injury compensation program in Maryland. George Deebo, director of the Virginia Birth-Related Neurological Injury Program, spoke about the functioning of Virginia’s birth-injury program. Harvard Medical School professor Allen Kachalia, MD, described how an administrative approach to injury compensation could enhance safety and quality. A panel of Maryland respondents, including representatives from the physician, hospital and patient communities, discussed how such a program would effect Maryland healthcare.  Maryland policy makers then shared their perspectives on the prospects for the state.
