NewTalk
Assistant to the Editor (NYC)
(July 2008)

Background

Common Good is a non-profit, non-partisan legal reform coalition dedicated to restoring common sense to America and reliability to America’s legal system. By conducting polls, hosting forums, and engaging with leaders in health care, education, law, business, and public policy from across the country, Common Good is developing practical solutions to restore reliability to our legal system and minimize the impact of legal fear in American life.

NewTalk has been organized under the auspices of Common Good. This new online forum presents focused discussions by experts on the most important domestic topics shaping American society today. NewTalk brings together experts in theory, policy and practice—from academics and lawmakers to admired practitioners—to share their diverse perspectives on pressing domestic issues.

Common Good’s Founder and Chair, Philip K. Howard, is a lawyer, civic leader, adviser to leaders of both parties, and bestselling author of The Death of Common Sense and The Collapse of the Common Good.

Role

NewTalk is currently seeking a bright and attentive individual to act as the Editor’s Assistant.

The Editor’s Assistant is primarily responsible for managing the posts sent by the experts to the NewTalk editor: editing each comment in MS Word; posting text to the NewTalk website via the backend software and sending update emails to the panel of experts as new posts appear on the NewTalk discussion pages.

Advanced proficiency with MS Word is required. Familiarity with blog software and basic HTML is not required, but a willingness/capacity to learn is an absolute must. Bonus skills include Flash, Photoshop and the ability to set up, maintain and troubleshoot PC hardware. You must also be able to switch gears at the drop of a hat and manage multiple concurrent priorities.

The Assistant to the Editor is also responsible for researching specific discussion topics and assembling topic briefings (to be distributed to experts prior to each discussion). Other duties include managing booking documents (tracking the experts who are scheduled to appear on NewTalk) and keeping schedules up-to-date. The Assistant to the Editor also needs to be available to provide tech support for the inevitable glitches and hiccups, as well as handling potential NewTalk-related questions from panelists and their staff.

NewTalk engages in a variety of issues connected to public discourse and policy, so it goes without saying that an eagerness to be involved in a project such as this will be beneficial to all involved.
