Equal Educational Opportunities Act

The Equal Education Opportunities Act prohibits deliberate segregation within or among schools. Its intent is to require equal educational opportunity for all students regardless of race, color, sex, or national origin.

Obligations

  • Students cannot be assigned to a school other than the school closest to their residence, if such assignment would increase segregation. Students may not voluntarily or involuntarily be transferred between schools, if the purpose and effect of the transfer is to increase segregation;
  • No discrimination in the employment or assignment of faculty or staff is permitted;
  • Educational agencies are required to take "appropriate action" to overcome language barriers for students.
